Ever notice how annoying bios are? I’ve always hated putting together a “bio.” But apparently they are everywhere. Aren’t people supposed to love talking about themselves? How do I talk about myself?
So, I spent years working on a static bio to be put in the programs of shows I was in. These usually run like a short little resume with some sort of lame little quip at the end, like, my favorite food is Cheez-Whiz or some sort of inside joke that only people in the audience who know that person will get.
Then there are the bios on things like myspace and blogs where really you’re trying to get people to think you’re cool. Deliciously and cryptically apathetic, overly dramatic, identity dodging schpiels.
My least favorite are the bios you have to write for jobs and/or applications, scholarships. “Tell us why you deserve this position/funding/income/abuse/joke?” “Well, I’m pretty much the bomb diggity. Let me tell you how totally fabulous I am and why you should pick me.” It’s like the adult version of choosing your dodgeball team in gym class. The crappy thing is, I was almost always one of the last to be picked.
I think it’s much more interesting to have other people write bios for you. So, here’s an experiment.: Who am I? Post a comment and give me a bio.
Hey, I visited your blog and I don’t know you, hehe. I felt the same way about writing a bio, so mine is like 4 lines long. Anyway, I’m in grad school, too, which is how I found your blog (the tag surfer). Have a good summer and fun working in the archives.

Okay Shannon, here goes:
From my eyes, you are:
inspiring (always made me read more and work harder when I had classes with you)
generous (let me ask my husband if he can give you a job, among others)
sensitive (I am so worried about your very sick dog, how can I help?)
beautiful (hair cuts, weight loss, new clothes–didn’t matter what you did or wore, you are beautiful inside and out)
super-smart (again with the trying harder in classes, but my GOD–thanks for the help with the theory!)
not in touch enough (okay, you might see this as a ding, but it’s true! I would have liked to have shared your pregnancy journey since I was going through it too!)
These are but a few of the myriad ways I see you. I am so intrigued by your blog and can’t wait to have a chat with you about what’s happening here and with your scholarship–I suspect we might have some intersections to discuss.
